Well, Tori came up the block With her portable stereo. We’d sit upon the driveway And listen to Brother Jack blow. She said, “turn it up.” She said, “soak it in. Let it ride you on down, child When the walls they cave in.” You know it used to be so simple When you dig just what you dig. Nobody asks you questions, It ain’t why, it just is. We’d take that train Up to Asbury Park. “Bring your camera along, girl. And a flash for when it gets dark.” We would talk inspiration, The kind that comes from the unkown. “Have you ever transcended, When you’re strung out on the floor?” You know it used to be so simple When you dig just what you dig. Nobody asks you questions, It ain’t why, it just is. We’ll go walking down by the river. I will tell you all my dreams and my fears. Have you ever felt so alone, Since we came around here? Well, Tori came from the block With her portable stereo. We would sit upon that driveway And listen to Ray Charles’ “I Believe To My Soul.” Well, I wanna tell her, “turn it up.” And she would tell me, “soak it in. She said, “let it ride you on down When the walls they cave in.” You know it used to be so simple When you dig just what you dig. Nobody asks you questions, It ain’t why, it just is.

When you’re out there on the road And you don’t got nowhere to go You’re tonge tied, you got nothing to say You’re lost in your thoughts And you can’t keep on keeping on She will come running to you. And your backs against the wall And you don’t got no one to call She’ll steal your soul, that’s what she’ll do. In the summerhouse of a lady Who ran madly for love You will get stranded in a dream. At the heart of a mountain Where the devils dance in the air You know she will always be standing there. And your backs against the wall And you don’t got no one to call She’ll steal your soul, that’s what she’ll do. And you never needed someone More than you need her love Does the levee seem to be broken? Has everything come undone? And your backs against the wall And you don’t got no one to call She’ll steal your soul, that’s what she’ll do. When you’re talking to yourself Through all the nervousness of hell She’ll help you will your selfishness and jealousy But you can’t run and you can’t hide There’s nowhere else to get by Because she will be waiting for you And your backs against the wall And you don’t got no one to call She’ll steal your soul, that’s what she’ll do. And your backs against the wall And you don’t got no one to call She’ll steal your soul, that’s what she’ll do.

When I need a little lovin’ And I can’t stand to call on you Because you never answer and you never call I just don’t know what to do When that bird don’t fly anymore And you’re living soul to soul You cannot stand to see the bard Deep in your heart I remember when we used to talk I was whisperin’ to you down the hall It was a conversation about validation It don’t mean nothing at all When that bird don’t fly anymore And you’re living soul to soul You cannot stand to see the bard Deep in your heart I waited for you I was standing in the rain I called out to you Well, you never came So when that bird don’t fly anymore And you’re living soul to soul You cannot stand to see the bard Deep in your heart I remember when we used to talk I was whisperin’ to you down the hall It was a conversation about validation It don’t mean nothing at all When that bird don’t fly anymore And you’re living soul to soul And you cannot stand to see the bard Deep in your heart

Have you ever felt so cold You can feel it in your throat? And there ain’t no last summers rose To hold on to. All the lies you told yourself Do they really mean something now? If you gotta do it, you gotta do it by yourself Oh yes do, and you know it’s true. Well, that bird she don’t fly no more She’s gone, she’s gone for good. She left for the western shore Never said goodbye. Well, I’d very much like to see her again Along with all my friends So bring along ole Patti and Jim We’d have a good time, you know it’s true. All those debts you have to pay Will they leave you some fine day Or will they carry you to your grave Inside of you. All the things that you’ve done wrong Though you didn’t mean any harm You’re gonna carry them in your arms They’re gonna stick with you, you know it’s true.

about

On a fateful spring day, past the gates of Amsterdam, a caravan gathered to cross the river in the pursuit of putting some songs to tape for posterity and sentimental reasons. Spread across the floor with a few microphones in between the red light came on and well, sometimes you just gotta listen to the band play it soulful...
